July 30, 2021 NF Legislative Roundup: Justice Reform

Criminal justice reform is one of our highest priorities, so here are some things that caught our eye this week!

Colorado

  • P. 24(d)(5)
    • Why we’re watching: Following the civil unrest of 2020, the Colorado Supreme Court ordered employees to consider racial equity in the workplace. In response, attorneys on the state’s Rules of Criminal Procedures Committee recommended a proposal to improve jury selection, which has historically favored white defendants. The Supreme Court unanimously rejected the notion, disavowing the justice reform it once requested.

Georgia

  • 2022 State Budget
    • Why we’re watching: In another endorsement of the status quo, Georgia lawmakers proposed a $1,000 bonus to every police officer in the state, wanting to combat mental health issues. So, where is the cash for all of the Black people living in fear of law enforcement, Georgia?

Maryland

  • Juvenile Justice Reform
    • Why we’re watching: Maryland is infamous for its propensity to try children as adults. In fact, 90% of the children labeled as “adults” in this manner are children of color. Now, the state is conducting hearings to get a full scope of the issue and craft targeted reforms founded in racial equity.

Missouri

  • 2022-045
    • Why we’re watching: This ballot initiative would legalize the recreational use of marijuana in Missouri, which would be a valuable step forward in the fight for justice reform and against the disastrous War on Drugs. Voters will consider the constitutional amendment next year.
  • 2022-047
    • Why we’re watching: Similar to the above ballot initiative, this amendment would permit doctors to recommend the medicinal use of marijuana to patients. If approved, this law would be a half-measure to create true racial equity in drug laws, but it may be a good start.
