August 6, 2021 NF Legislative Roundup: Policy Check-Up

We’ve been telling you about the different laws passed across the country for a while now. It’s time for a check-up on some of those bills!

California

  • San Diego Master Parks Plan
    • Why we’re watching: Earlier this week, San Diego instituted a new funding formula that will boost the greenery and shared space of underprivileged communities. Not only will this reform address decades-long inequality in park funding, but also cut back on heat inequality that plagues most major American cities.

Colorado

  • SB217
    • Why we’re watching: Colorado definitely passes its check-up. Earlier this year, the state passed SB217, which mandates police wear body cameras and departments report excessive force complaints. As a result, justice officials are charging officers with various crimes more often than ever.

Federal

  • Eviction Moratorium
    • Why we’re watching: As the long-standing eviction moratorium expired last week, Congress broke for recess. To protest the expiration, Representatives Cori Bush and Ocasio-Cortez staged a sit-in demonstration on the steps of the Capitol. As a result, President Biden approved a new 60-day moratorium to protect low-income renters.

New York

  • S854A
    • Why we’re watching: After New York legalized the recreational use of marijuana, there were questions about how Native American tribes would address the reform. Since then, they’ve created the Trial Cannabis Exchange to issue licenses and oversee transactions of marijuana.

Oregon

  • Every Student Belongs Act
    • Why we’re watching: Members of Oregon’s Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) caucus recently condemned the Newberg School District’s attempt to reverse a prohibition of hate symbols like swastikas and Confederate flags. Opponents of the act highlighted (in bad faith) that Black Lives Matter and pride insignia weren’t a subject of the law.
